Habib University, Karachi

The Physics Lab will develop and transfer a set of thirteen physics experiments to the Habib University in Karachi. Quoting from Habib University's School of Science and Engineering website:

"The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) aims to have a profound impact on the society and economy of Pakistan. It shall be a center of excellence in Science and Engineering education and research. Through innovation and leadership, its graduates shall establish and propagate a technology driven culture and lead technological advancement in Pakistan."

The project fosters a new episode in sharing cutting-edge tools and techniques in modern, research-inspired science education and also promotes the development and transfer of indigenous instructional systems developed at the Physics Lab of the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. Under this contract, the Physlab team comprising Dr. Sabieh Anwar, Dr. Imran Younus, Hafiz Rizwan, Junaid Alam, Amrozia Shaheen, Khadim Hussain and Azeem Iqbal will be involved in replicating experiments already in place at the Physlab. The project will culminate in a concentrated teacher training program.

Physics lab has recently completed the collaborative project of technology transfer with Habib University. Under the agreement, thirteen experiments were designed and the home-made equipment along with the learning methodologies has been transferred to the recipient institution on August 8, 2014. The project was completed in a short duration of two months. The physics lab team has also provided the essential training to the teachers of Habib University. Further details are available here.

Preston University, Islamabad

In November 2013, the Physlab developed an introductory experiment on Measurement of Planck's constant using a light bulb for the undergraduate program at Preston University in Islamabad. Two setups of this innovative experiment were designed at LUMS and the equipment alongwith learning material was transferred to the university.

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology

In September 2011, The Physics Laboratory SSE deployed select freshmen experiments in the undergraduate physics laboratory at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology. Under the agreement, equipment and materials designed and built at LUMS, with accompanying monographs, software and instructor resources were transferred. Muhammad Wasif and Muhammad Yusuf traveled to GIKI, set up the experiments and provided essential training to teachers at GIKI. This represents a rare happening in Pakistan, where one University shares its technology and learning resources with another University, and has now happened for the second time. The goal of this initiative of resource sharing is to germinate seeds of world-class education in physics experimentation throughout Pakistan.

Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad

Physics lab is replicating some of its experiments at the Institute of Space Technology (IST), Islamabad. Physics lab has built and setup seven experiments, provided manuals and software. This is a pioneering moment in the history of Universities in this country.

The SSE Physics Lab, led by Dr. Sabieh Anwar, is setting up a freshman laboratory at the Institute of Space Technology (IST) in Islamabad, the educational face of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Commission (SUPARCO). In this venture, seven experiments – covering an interesting variety of fields of physics – will be deployed at the IST campus. This project will not only generate valuable revenue for the Physics Lab but will also contribute to the lab’s mission of initiating a paradigm shift in the education of physics experimentation in the country.

The inception of Physics Lab at SSE was powered by a vision of self-sufficiency and indigenous research and development. In materializing this dream, great efforts have been made by the team driving the ‘PhysLab’ (as it is popularly called). The freshmen laboratory now stands as the embodiment of the dream that commenced this pursuit. A considerable part of equipment and apparatus is home-made and locally designed which not only reflects on a need towards self-adequacy, but shows an inkling of native intellectual capacity as well.

As was the mission, SSE Physics Lab decided to spread this passion further in the institutions of Pakistan, and as the first indication, the freshmen laboratory at IST Islamabad will be enlightening a generation with what has been a fruit of the labor of a devoted team – the vertebrae of whose backbone are the people like Wasif Zia, Sohaib shamim, Ahmed Waqas Zubairi, Waqas Mahmood, Muhammad Wasif, Asma Khalid, Junaid Alam, Amrozia Shaheen, Muhammad Yusuf, Ali Hassan and Umer Hassan – at SSE Physics Lab.
